The Well and the Warrior
This poem blends personal struggle with biblical hope. May it remind you that even in the darkest valleys, when you are down and out, you are not alone. Whether you're crying out to God or stepping into a new dawn, know that your journey matters, your pain is seen, and hope remains.
In the velvet hush of midnight’s tomb,
In the velvet hush of midnight’s tomb,
I called to You—my voice a stone
Psalm 77:1 — "I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me."
Tossed into a bottomless well,
Where echoes die and hope is overthrown.
Psalm 88:6 — "You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths."
Silence pressed like ancient earth,
A weight that crushed the breath from prayer,
Lamentations 3:8 — "Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer."
And I, unmoored, fell through the dark—
A soul unspooled, unraveling in despair.
Psalm 42:5 — "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?"
No star, no sign, no gentle hand,
Only the cold, the ache, the void—
Job 23:8-9 — "But if I go to the east, he is not there; if I go to the west, I do not find him."
A kingdom ruled by shadow’s law,
Where faith is mocked and joy destroyed.
Ephesians 6:12 — "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world..."
I wept for You, for any sound,
But heaven’s gate was locked and barred;
Psalm 22:2 — "My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest."
My spirit bruised, my knuckles raw
From pounding on a door unguarded.
Matthew 7:7 — "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."
Yet when the pit was deepest,
When hope was but a memory’s ghost,
Psalm 40:2 — "He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand."
A tremor stirred the blackened air—
A whisper, then a host.
1 Kings 19:12 — "And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire a still small voice."
Archangel Michael, sword ablaze,
Descended with a thunder’s cry;
Revelation 12:7 — "Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon..."
He cleaved the demons from my path,
Their shrieks were drowned by battle’s sky.
Luke 10:19 — "I have given you authority... to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you."
Angels, fierce and bright as dawn,
Surrounded me with wings of flame;
Psalm 91:11 — "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways."
They shattered chains, they broke the night,
They called me out and spoke my name.
Isaiah 43:1 — "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine."
I passed the test, the trial endured,
The darkness could not claim my soul;
James 1:12 — "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life..."
The TARDIS hummed, its doors flung wide—
I stepped inside, made broken whole.
2 Corinthians 5:17 — "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
A lightsaber, forged in holy fire,
Was pressed into my trembling hand;
Ephesians 6:17 — "Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
The Spirit’s wind filled up my lungs—
I rose, a warrior, to stand.
Ezekiel 37:5 — "This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life."
No longer lost, no longer bound,
A Jedi, time-traveler, set free;
John 8:36 — "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
Restored, renewed, a liberator—
A soul reborn in victory.
Romans 8:37 — "No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us."
Now nothing halts my forward march—
I bear the grace of ancient kings,
1 Peter 2:9 — "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession..."
The strength of mountains, patience of stars,
Obedience that soars on eagle’s wings.
Isaiah 40:31 — "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles..."
I fear no darkness, dread no foe,
For God alone commands my awe;
Psalm 27:1 — "The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?"
My halo blazes, forged in hell,
Returned from death, I heed His call.
Romans 6:4 — "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead... we too may live a new life."
The ship has come, the journey’s done—
I step aboard, my exile past;
Philippians 3:20 — "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there..."
Homeward bound, I sail the stars,
Redeemed, unbroken, free at last.
John 14:2-3 — "My Father’s house has many rooms... I am going there to prepare a place for you... I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
