Historic Lectern from Former Gold Coast Hospital Chapel Rescued and Set for Restoration
The lectern, once a central feature in the chapel of the former Gold Coast Hospital where Father Sid Rogers preached, has been carefully preserved and is now undergoing restoration to continue its meaningful service.
When the original Gold Coast Hospital was demolished around 2013, local Gold Coast Councillor Dawn Crichlow (O.A.M.) played a pivotal role in saving the chapel by facilitating its relocation and preservation as the Rotary Broadwater Chapel by the Sea in Southport’s Broadwater Parklands. This elegant, non-denominational chapel offers stunning waterfront views and serves as a cherished venue for weddings and community events.
Meanwhile, the new Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) was built and features the GCUH Gubbai Sacred Space and Chapel, providing spiritual care and support to patients and visitors.
The lectern is now being lovingly restored and will soon be delivered to Reverend Michelle Philp, Anglican Chaplain, for use at Robina Hospital’s Spiritual Care Services, where it will continue its legacy within the hospital chapel.
This restoration honours the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Gold Coast, preserving treasured memories and prayers for generations to come.
Our deepest gratitude to Barry Cathcart and St James Anglican Church, Biggera Waters for graciously safeguarding this treasured lectern. You can learn more about their wonderful community here.
We also extend sincere thanks to Frank Reynolds and all those who dedicated their time and effort to the restoration, to Angel Carrasco, Director of Social Work and Spiritual Care Services, for warmly welcoming the lectern, and to the entire Spiritual Care team for their compassionate support.
Last but certainly not least, a heartfelt thank you to our remarkable retired Councillor Dawn Crichlow for her unwavering commitment to preserving the heritage of the chapel, and to Father Sid Rogers, Retired with Permission to Officiate, Parish of Gold Coast North.
Gracious God,
We thank You for this lectern, once a witness to faith in the chapel of the Gold Coast Hospital,
now restored to serve again in the healing space of Robina Hospital.
May it be a vessel of Your peace and comfort to patients, families, and caregivers alike.
Bless all who gather around it to find strength in Your Word,
and may Your presence bring hope and healing in times of need.
Use this lectern to proclaim Your love and mercy,
guiding hearts toward restoration and grace.
In Your holy name we pray, Amen.
