Honoring Bishop John Parkes AM: A Pioneer of Inclusion and Faith

Remembering Bishop John Parkes AM: A Life of Faith, Compassion, and Community

On July 3, 2025, the Anglican Diocese of Wangaratta and the wider community mourned the passing of Anthony John Parkes, affectionately known as Bishop John Parkes AM. As the 10th Bishop of Wangaratta, Bishop John’s life was a testament to faith, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his community.

A Legacy of Warmth and Welcome

Bishop John was more than a religious leader; he was a friend, a mentor, and a beacon of hope for many. His warm smile and genuine kindness made everyone feel welcome, whether they were longtime parishioners or newcomers. His presence enriched countless lives, from leading Eucharist services to participating in school events and community celebrations.

His commitment to inclusivity was evident in his pioneering support for civil marriage equality and his blessing of same-sex marriages—actions that helped make Australia a more compassionate and just society. As one reflection shared during the marriage equality debate noted, Bishop John saw this not as radical change but as an expansion of belonging to those previously excluded.

A Groundbreaking Moment in Church History

On 21 November 2020, Bishop John Parkes, then retired, conducted the first blessing of a same-sex civil marriage in an Australian Anglican church following a landmark Appellate Tribunal decision. The service, held at St Paul’s Church, Milawa, blessed the marriage of retired clergy Revd Dr John Davis and Revd Rob Whalley using a liturgy approved by the Wangaratta Synod.

This historic event followed the Tribunal’s ruling that such blessings were lawful and consistent with the Church’s Constitution, clarifying that these blessings do not constitute the solemnization of marriage but rather affirm and welcome couples married under Australian law. Bishop John expressed his hope that this would send a clear message to LGBTIQ people that they are loved and affirmed by God’s church.

While the decision sparked debate within the Anglican Church, Bishop John’s leadership demonstrated courage and compassion, helping to expand the circle of belonging within the Church.

A Community’s Heartfelt Tributes

Messages of condolence poured in from all corners of the community, highlighting the profound impact Bishop John had on individuals and families alike. Friends recalled his pastoral care, his love for fly fishing, and even his simple acts of kindness—like sharing a tomato ketchup sandwich that became a cherished memory.

The Rotary Club of Milawa Oxley honoured him as a friend and honorary member, while many others remembered his ecumenical spirit and his efforts to build bridges across faiths and communities. His legacy is one of friendship, faith, and service.

A Service of Thanksgiving

A Diocesan Service of Thanksgiving for Bishop John’s life and ministry will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral in Wangaratta.

The Diocese has asked that messages of condolence be sent to their administration email, respecting the family’s privacy during this time of mourning.

Words from Rodney Croome AM

Rodney Croome AM, a renowned Australian LGBTQIA+ rights activist and academic, reflected on Bishop John’s thoughtful nature and his sensitivity to the needs of others. Rodney led the successful campaign to decriminalise homosexuality in Tasmania and has been a tireless advocate for equality.

He emphasized how Bishop John’s support for marriage equality was rooted in a deep understanding of love, kinship, and the human need for acknowledgment. Rodney’s words remind us that Bishop John’s ministry was not just about tradition but about expanding the circle of love and acceptance.

Bishop John Parkes AM’s life was a shining example of faith in action. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched and in the community he so lovingly served. May we all find inspiration in his example of compassion, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice.

For those wishing to honour his memory, the Diocese encourages prayers and reflections, holding close the words of Psalm 46:1:
