Finding New Treasures in Familiar Places: Reflections on "Safety in God Alone" and Life’s Journey

A week of discovery, faith, and gratitude inspired by a beautiful song and scripture.

This week, I can’t get a song out of my head — "Safety in God Alone" by Amazing Blondel. It’s been a soundtrack to a week full of discovery and reflection, reminding me how much wonder can be found even in places we think we know well.

I was born on the Gold Coast, and just yesterday, after doing my 10,000 steps, I stumbled upon a park I had never seen before. It was breathtaking — full of butterflies, ancient trees, and an almost angelic atmosphere. How had I lived here all my life and never known this hidden gem existed? It’s a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the greatest discoveries are right under our noses.

Lately, I’ve been back in my hometown for a few months, and it’s given me time to reflect. I often think about the Starship Enterprise — how life can feel like a grand exploration. For a while, my own starship has been docked, undergoing upgrades and repairs. But now, it’s time to leave the loading bay again. Whether that means moving locally or venturing further afield, I’m reminded that the seeds we plant today will bear fruit tomorrow.

The lyrics that resonate most with me are the pilgrims’ cry and the refrain “safety in God alone.” What a powerful message in these times — a call to trust, to be brave, and to keep moving forward with faith.

This week’s lectionary reading from Luke 12:32-40 feels like a perfect companion to these thoughts. Jesus encourages us not to be afraid, reminding us that it is our Father’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom. He calls us to live with readiness and alertness, to treasure what truly matters, and to be prepared for the unexpected.

Luke 12:32 — "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom."

Luke 12:33 — "Sell your possessions and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys."

Luke 12:34 — "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Luke 12:35 — "Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit;"

Luke 12:36 — "be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks."

Luke 12:37 — "Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them."

Luke 12:38 — "If he comes during the middle of the night or near dawn and finds them so, blessed are those slaves."

Luke 12:39 — "But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into."

Luke 12:40 — "You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."

This passage invites us to live with open hearts and watchful spirits, embracing the adventure of life with trust and hope. It’s a call to cherish the treasures that don’t fade — love, faith, and the promise of God’s kingdom.

As I walk through this newfound park, surrounded by the beauty of creation, I feel a deep gratitude for this exciting time to be alive. There is so much to explore, so much to learn, and so much to give thanks for.

May we all find safety in God alone, and may our journeys be filled with wonder, courage, and grace.
