Keep Southport Sacred: Heritage Applications Lodged to Protect St Peter’s Anglican and Southport Uniting Churches
Heritage Protection Progress
Project Update: Assessment Success
The City of Gold Coast Heritage Coordinator has confirmed that both St Peter’s Anglican Church and Southport Uniting Church have successfully met the criteria for entry onto the Local Heritage Register. These nominations are now being processed for public and Council consideration within this calendar year.
This is a landmark moment for the preservation of Southport’s history. Our applications to protect these sacred spaces represent more than just a desire to save old buildings—they are a commitment to protecting the "soul" of the Gold Coast from the pressures of redevelopment.
St Peter’s Anglican Church
Established as a parish in 1886, St Peter’s on Nerang Street remains a cornerstone of our community. The 1960 Memorial Church stands as a tribute to our veterans and the pioneering families who built Southport. Its stained glass and historic pipe organ are irreplaceable assets to our city’s cultural landscape.
Southport Uniting Church
Located on Scarborough Street, this site is a unique architectural landmark featuring a rare parabolic roof. As a place of worship and social outreach for the Gold Coast, its historical and social significance has now been formally recognised by the City's heritage team.
A Legacy Worth Protecting
As a fourth-generation Gold Coaster, I have seen our city change rapidly. While progress is necessary, it should not come at the cost of our spiritual and social heritage. By securing these listings, we ensure that the stories of our ancestors and the sacred nature of these grounds are preserved for the generations that follow.
