Save St Paul’s Bankstown: Continuing the Fight to Preserve Our Sacred Heritage
Since our last update on August 1, 2025, when we called on the community to have their say for St Paul’s Anglican Church, Bankstown, much has happened. The story of St Paul’s is one of resilience amid adversity, and our commitment to saving this historic church remains unwavering.
Over the past months, the issues surrounding St Paul’s have come under intense scrutiny. Earlier blog posts have exposed deep challenges within the Sydney Anglican Diocese including spiritual bullying and misleading and deceptive conduct that have shaken the community’s trust. These revelations, detailed in our June reports, have only strengthened our resolve to protect St Paul’s Bankstown.
The church’s struggle is not just local but touches on wider questions of faithfulness and leadership, as explored in our June 10 article about the tensions involving Lambeth Palace and the Diocese. Meanwhile, the threat of demolition looms large, with Bankstown Council’s questionable dealings putting this sacred space at risk, as highlighted in our June 1 coverage.
Despite a decade-long heritage battle, the threat of imminent demolition remains real. The Council’s letter dated 18 June 2025 outlined conditions including the preparation of a Salvage Plan and Interpretation Plan, but since then, progress has stalled.
In response, the Save St Paul’s Bankstown team has formally incorporated and met in Bankstown to strengthen our efforts. We have scheduled a meeting with legal counsel on 7 October 2025 to explore all avenues, including the possibility of seeking an injunction.
Today, we have written to Nicholas Aley, Teamleader – Planning (West) at the City of Canterbury Bankstown, requesting an urgent update on the demolition application (DA-438/2025). While the Council officer has indicated a leaning towards approval, this is subject to the outcomes of approximately 17 submissions opposing demolition.
We press on with hope and determination, knowing that this fight is about more than bricks and mortar — it is about preserving a community’s faith, history, and identity.
A Prayer for St Paul’s Bankstown
Heavenly Father,
We lift up St Paul’s Bankstown to You, a place of worship, refuge, and community.
Grant wisdom and courage to those who stand to protect it.
May Your justice prevail over injustice, and Your peace calm the hearts of all involved.
Guide the hands and hearts of decision-makers to honor the sacred heritage entrusted to them.
We ask that legal counsel act swiftly, that the right team be assembled, and that financial resources be provided.
Please gather here the team of earth angels and heavenly angels to support and guide us in this fight.
In Your holy name, we pray. Amen.
