Queer Theology — A contemplative weekly reflection on the readings

Queer Reflection for this Sunday

A short liturgical and contemplative guide reading scripture through a Queer Theology lens.

If you want a quick orientation to queer spirituality, see our short primer here. Sit with these readings and invite the Spirit to surprise you.

This Week's Lectionary Readings

  • Lamentations 1:1-6

The reading describes the grief and mourning of a community that feels abandoned and isolated, highlighting the pain of exclusion and loss.

Contemplative Practice: Imagine yourself as the one who has been cast out, allowing yourself to feel the depth of that pain and seeking comfort in the knowledge that you are not alone.

    ✝︎
  • Lamentations 3:19-26

This passage speaks of hope and restoration after suffering, emphasizing the presence of God even in the darkest times.

Contemplative Practice: Reflect on a time when you felt lost and alone, and meditate on the hope that comes from knowing that God is with you, bringing healing and restoration.

    ✝︎
  • Habakkuk 1:1-4

The prophet questions the injustices and suffering in the world, expressing the frustration of witnessing oppression and violence.

Contemplative Practice: Sit with the discomfort of questioning why injustice exists and invite God into that space, seeking wisdom and guidance on how to work towards a more just world.

    ✝︎
  • Psalm 37:1-9

The psalmist encourages trust in God's justice, even in the face of oppression and violence.

Contemplative Practice: Reflect on times when you have felt powerless or marginalized, and meditate on the assurance that God sees and values your struggle for justice.

    ✝︎
  • 2 Timothy 1:1-14

Paul's letter to Timothy speaks of the power of God's Spirit and the call to courageously live out one's faith, even in the face of persecution.

Contemplative Practice: Consider the ways in which you are called to live authentically and courageously as an LGBT+ person, inviting the Spirit to guide and empower you.

    ✝︎
  • Luke 17:5-10

Jesus teaches about the power of faith and humility, emphasizing the importance of serving others with humility and gratitude.

Contemplative Practice: Reflect on the ways in which you can serve others with humility and grace, recognizing the value of each person's unique gifts and experiences.

These readings remind us that even in times of suffering and injustice, God is present and invites us to seek hope, justice, and healing. For LGBT+ individuals, these texts speak to the importance of community, resilience, and the courage to live authentically in the face of adversity.

A Prayer

God of surprising welcome, meet us at the margins and make their stories holy among us. Teach us to read with tenderness, to honour strange joys, and to hold wounds with reverence. Breathe your courage into our worship and our care. Amen.

We seek to practice welcome and dignity for all folk as part of our ministry. Read, reflect, and join us each Friday.

Our site uses the Revised Common Lectionary for scripture readings. For more information about the Lectionary and how we use it, please visit this page.
