Queer Theology — A contemplative weekly reflection on the readings
Queer Reflection for this Sunday
A short liturgical and contemplative guide reading scripture through a Queer Theology lens.
If you want a quick orientation to queer spirituality, see our short primer here. Sit with these readings and invite the Spirit to surprise you.
This Week's Lectionary Readings
-
Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4
The wicked surround the righteous — a cry for justice met with a call to faithful perseverance and vision.
Contemplative Practice: Where do you see perverted judgment today? Pray Habakkuk’s honesty and wait with faithful resolve.
✝︎ -
Psalm 119:137-144
Grant me understanding — delight in God’s just decrees even amid trouble and anguish.
Contemplative Practice: Pray for understanding that sustains courage in the face of contempt.
✝︎ -
Isaiah 1:10-18
Learn to do good — God rejects performative worship and commands justice for the oppressed.
Contemplative Practice: Name one concrete act this week to “seek justice, rescue the oppressed.”
✝︎ -
Psalm 32:1-7
Praying in time of trouble — confession opens a refuge of deliverance.
Contemplative Practice: Breathe out what you carry; breathe in God’s sheltering joy.
✝︎ -
2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12
Faith and love amid adversity — God fulfills every good resolve and work of faith.
Contemplative Practice: Offer one intention for your community’s steadfastness and mutual love.
✝︎ -
Luke 19:1-10
Zacchaeus climbs high to see Jesus — a scandalous welcome births reparative justice.
Contemplative Practice: Where might Jesus be “staying” with those we call outsiders today? What reparation follows welcome?
✝︎
Queer Theology Reflection
The Gospel reading of Luke 19:1-10 meets LGBT+ lives in the space of radical welcome that transforms economics and belonging. Like Zacchaeus, those named “sinner” are called by name and restored to community through justice.
Sermon Preview (pastoral focus)
We’ll explore how real welcome entails material repair. Practice this week: identify one local reparation you can join or begin that restores dignity and equity.
About "Sunday is coming, Jeremy": A weekly reflection series by The Most Reverend Jeremy Greaves, Anglican Archbishop, offering short preparing reflections for Sunday. If you prefer watching, open the playlist above.
Archbishop Jeremy Greaves has publicly offered support to LGBT+ people; the Diocese has taken steps toward inclusion.
Join us this Friday for a space of reflection and contemplation, where we will explore the theme of radical love and inclusion in the Gospel readings. Your presence and perspective are valued in this sacred space of affirmation and community.
A Prayer
God of surprising welcome, meet us at the margins and make their stories holy among us. Teach us to read with tenderness, to honour strange joys, and to hold wounds with reverence. Breathe your courage into our worship and our care. Amen.
We seek to practice welcome and dignity for all folk as part of our ministry. Read, reflect, and join us each Friday.
