EVENING OFFICE

Nightly Purification for the Soul

JANUARY 5, 2026

"“Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.”"

— Isaiah 1:16-17

As the day draws to a close and the world outside quiets its hurried pace, we are invited to pause and reflect on the weight of our actions. Isaiah calls us to wash ourselves clean, urging us to shed the burdens of our day—the worries, the wrongs, and the distractions that have clouded our hearts. In this sacred space, we can take a moment to consider the choices we've made and the paths we've walked. Let us release the remnants of a busy day, allowing ourselves to be refreshed and renewed in the presence of the Divine.

In this moment of examen, let us turn our eyes inward and seek the fingerprints of God throughout our day. Where did His presence intersect with our lives? Did we notice the whisper of His love in the laughter of a friend or the beauty of a sunset? Were there moments when we failed to defend the oppressed or neglected the call to seek justice? As we reflect, let us invite the Holy Spirit to illuminate our hearts, guiding us to acknowledge both our failings and our triumphs, knowing that each moment is an opportunity for growth and transformation.

As we prepare for sleep, let us release our worries into the hands of the One who cares deeply for us. The burdens we carry can weigh heavy on our hearts, but we are reminded that we need not bear them alone. In stillness, let us surrender our anxieties, trusting that God's grace will cover our concerns as we rest. May we find peace in the assurance that tomorrow brings a new opportunity to learn, to do right, and to love fiercely, just as we are called to do.

The Benediction

Peace to those who are far off, and peace to those who are near. Lord, we gather in this moment, seeking Your presence as we reflect on our day. Cleanse our hearts and minds from the distractions and missteps that have clouded our vision. Help us to learn to do right, to seek justice where it is lacking, and to defend the oppressed, the fatherless, and the widow. Lighten our darkness, Lord, and fill us with Your love and wisdom as we strive to embody Your grace in our lives. May we find comfort in Your embrace as we entrust You with our worries and fears. Amen.
