Honours List 2026: The 2026 Australia Day Honours
In a powerful celebration of service and tenacity, the 2026 Australia Day Honours List has spotlighted the individuals who form the backbone of the nation's character. From the athletics track to the halls of parliament and the front lines of scientific innovation, this year’s list of 949 Australians reflects a country in deep appreciation of its community leaders.
Twenty-six years after her legendary 400m sprint in Sydney, Cathy Freeman has been appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC). Freeman, a Kuku Yalanji and Birri Gubba woman, was recognized not only for her athletic brilliance but for her enduring commitment to reconciliation.
The list also signals a transition of leadership across the states. Former Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk received the AC for her service to public health and education, while former leaders Kristina Keneally and Steven Marshall were also recognized.
From 87-year-old historian Maurice Kensell to the 32-year-old social entrepreneurs behind HoMie, the 2026 list proves that the "spirit of service" has no age limit. It is a mosaic of researchers, paramedics, and artists who continue to push the boundaries of what it means to be Australian.
