Supreme Court Outlaws "Satanism": Russia Expands Extremism Ban Nationwide
In a sweeping decision, Russia’s Supreme Court has officially designated the so-called “International Satanist Movement” as an extremist organization. The ruling, led by Judge Oleg Nefedov, effectively bans all activities, occult rituals, and ideological principles associated with the group across the country.
Authorities have labeled the ban a victory in what they describe as a "geopolitical and spiritual struggle." This move follows a year-long campaign where state officials and the Russian Orthodox Church have increasingly used the label of "Satanism" to categorize various subcultures, childfree advocates, and LGBTQ+ identities as threats to the national constitutional order.
While specific violent occult groups exist globally, human rights observers note that the "International Satanist Movement" as defined by the court does not actually exist as a formal organization, raising concerns that the broad definition will be used to further suppress domestic dissent.
As people of faith, we must distinguish between the protection of spiritual integrity and the use of religious language to marginalize the "other." True spiritual victory is found in the expansion of love and liberty, not in the legislative demonization of those who live differently.
Prayer: Prince of Peace, we pray for those living under the weight of restrictive laws. Grant wisdom to leaders to seek true justice, and protect the vulnerable from being labeled as "evil" for the sake of political power. Amen.
