Bishop Richard Condie and the Dangerous Rhetoric of GAFCON

Jesus at the Well
A Pastoral Perspective

The Weight of Words: Reflections on the GAFCON Rhetoric

In an era where our community seeks healing and safety, the language of "Antichrists" invites us to consider the profound impact of pastoral influence.

We recognize the heavy burden of leadership carried by Bishop Richard Condie. However, the rhetoric emerging from the GAFCON conference in Abuja—specifically the characterization of fellow believers as “Many Antichrists”—calls for a moment of quiet reflection on the power of the spoken word to either wound or heal a community.

As we navigate the complexities of faith in 2026, we are all invited to move with a higher degree of emotional intelligence. The Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Act 2026 serves as a modern reminder of the unique responsibility held by those in spiritual authority. It encourages a standard where leadership is measured by its ability to foster safety and inclusion, ensuring that the influence of the pulpit is used to build social cohesion rather than deepen old divides.

"The way we behave toward one another is the fullest expression of what we believe."
Finding Grace at the Well

This weekend’s lectionary reading, John 4:5-42 (The Woman at the Well), offers a beautiful model of emotional intelligence in action. Jesus did not approach the Samaritan woman with labels of "falsehood" or "unbelief." Instead, he honored her humanity, listened to her story, and offered life-giving water. This path of radical empathy is the same path our modern laws now encourage: one where the dignity of every individual is protected from dehumanizing language.

Nurturing Community Safety in 2026

  • A Higher Calling: Modern legislation, such as Section 80.2DA, highlights that a leader's voice carries immense weight; it asks us to use that influence to soothe, not stir, social hostility.
  • A Legacy of Healing: While we work across different regions, the ongoing efforts in Tasmania to compensate for past harms remind us that our words today can either prevent tomorrow’s trauma or contribute to it.
  • Protecting the Vulnerable: By moving away from labels like "Antichrist," we create a sanctuary where people feel safe to pursue Truth without fear of exclusion or harassment.
A Commitment to One Another

As Progressive Christians, our vigilance is rooted in love. We seek to protect the sacred spaces of our churches from any ideology—whether from within our structures or without—that forgets the "Oneness" of life. The 2026 Act provides a framework for this protection, but the Spirit provides the motivation: to treat every neighbor with the same grace Jesus offered at the well.

We choose to leave the "jars" of judgment behind. We believe that true faith is found in the protection of the vulnerable and the restoration of our collective integrity through compassion and selfless love.
