Perpetua, Felicity and Companions

7 March 2026

The story of Perpetua, Felicity, and their companions is one of profound faith and courage in the face of adversity. Perpetua was a young noblewoman and mother, while Felicity was her pregnant servant. Together, they were arrested for their Christian beliefs during a time of intense persecution in Carthage, North Africa, around 203 AD. Despite the pressure to renounce their faith, both women remained steadfast, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to their beliefs. Their story is a testament to the power of faith and the deep bonds that can form between people united by a shared conviction. As we reflect on their sacrifice, we are reminded of the strength found in community and the courage to stand firm in our beliefs despite external pressures.

Their martyrdom serves as an inspiration for Christians throughout the ages. Perpetua's diary, one of the earliest known writings by a Christian woman, provides a vivid and personal account of their last days. It highlights the spiritual struggles and triumphs they experienced, offering us a glimpse into the early church's challenges and the fervent faith that sustained them. Today, their legacy encourages us to examine our own lives and convictions. Are we willing to stand up for our beliefs with the same bravery and determination? And how can we support and uplift those around us who are facing trials for their faith?

The Collect for Today

"Almighty God, who gave to your servants Perpetua, Felicity, and their companions such faithfulness and courage that they glorified you by their deaths, grant us grace to follow their example, that we may be steadfast in faith in the face of adversity, and rejoice to share in the communion of saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen."
