Brisbane Celebrate: Broncos Triumph in a Chaotic Grand Final
What a night for footy and for community spirit. As an Anglican who loves a good match and as a proud Broncos supporter, I’m still buzzing: the Brisbane Broncos have beaten the Melbourne Storm 26–22 in a grand final that had everything — a 10-point halftime comeback, wrenching injuries, heroic defense and moments that will sit in our memories for years.
Quick Match Snapshot
- Broncos trailed by 10 at half-time but stormed back in the second half.
- Key injuries: Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt left the field during the second half.
- Reece Walsh awarded the Clive Churchill Medal after an outstanding performance — including the try-saving tackle late in the game.
- Earlier in the day, the Broncos’ NRLW side edged out the Sydney Roosters 22–18 in a controversial finish involving Mele Hufanga’s match-winning try.
Turning Points & Moments
There were several moments that made the difference: Reece Walsh’s brilliant defence with a try-saving smash on Ryan Papenhuyzen, Trent Loiero’s sin bin late in the match that swung momentum, and a series of desperate, brilliant tackles from a makeshift Broncos backline. Tyson Smoothy’s composure in one of the final defensive stands and Ezra Mam’s try-saver were vital.
Injuries, Grit and Grace
The match wasn’t without pain. Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt both left the field injured — reminders that glory often comes with a physical cost. Ben Hunt, despite his sore-sounding voice, spoke of paying back what the club had given him and being "on top of the world" — a moving moment for anyone who believes in redemption and second chances.
NRLW — A Day to Remember (and Debate)
The Broncos’ NRLW team claimed the title 22–18 over the Roosters in a thrilling curtain-raiser. Mele Hufanga’s try that decided the match will be talked about for a while — controversial, dramatic and perfect fuel for post-match conversations in parish halls and pubs alike.
A Short Reflection for Anglican's
Sport and faith meet in the everyday: in teamwork, in perseverance when the odds are stacked against you, and in the way communities gather to celebrate and to care for those who are hurt. Tonight’s Broncos showed grit and heart; as a church family we can take inspiration from their courage and humility. Let’s celebrate with joy, be gentle in victory, and hold in prayer those who picked up knocks tonight.
