The Anglican Communion awaits with anticipation as the name of the next spiritual leader is set to be revealed this Friday. The Crown's nominee for the prestigious position of Archbishop of Canterbury has been selected following a comprehensive discernment process.

"The final meeting of the Canterbury Crown Nominations Commission (CNC) was held last week, and it is understood that a nominee was agreed by at least the required two-thirds majority."

The Selection Process

The selection committee, known as the Canterbury Crown Nominations Commission, consisted of 17 distinguished members. This diverse group included six representatives elected from the General Synod, five members representing the broader Anglican Communion, and three individuals from the Diocese of Canterbury.

Additionally, the commission was joined by the Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham Usher, and the Archbishop of York. The proceedings were chaired by Lord Evans of Weardale, a former head of MI5, who earlier this year described the process as "a discernment process rather than a selection process."

Historical Context

While the duration of this selection process may appear lengthy, it aligns with historical norms. Traditionally, these deliberations occur while the incumbent Archbishop remains in office. For instance, Justin Welby's nomination was announced in October 2012, with his predecessor, Lord Williams, departing in December of that year.

However, this transition differs from previous ones. Archbishop Welby was initially expected to retire by January 2026. His unexpected resignation, prompted by findings in the Keith Makin report regarding the mishandling of complaints against abuser John Smyth, resulted in this selection process occurring during an unprecedented vacancy in the See of Canterbury.
