All Souls' Day — Remembering the Faithful Departed
All Souls' Day

Remembering the Faithful Departed

"Jesus said, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live.'" — John 11:25

In the Anglican tradition, All Souls' Day gently follows All Saints' Day. Today we remember before God all the faithful departed—those we have loved and see no longer—and commend them to the mercy of our risen Lord. We trust that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Pause, pray, and remember—by name—those who have died, entrusting them to God's grace and light eternal.

Collect for All Souls' Day

Almighty and eternal God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical Body of your Son Christ our Lord: Grant, we pray, that all who have died in the hope of the resurrection may rest in peace and rise in glory; and that we, with them, may know the comfort of your Holy Spirit and the sure promises of your Word; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Scripture for Reflection

  • Wisdom 3:1–3 — "The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God…"
  • Psalm 23 — "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…"
  • John 14:1–6 — "In my Father's house are many dwelling places…"
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 — "We do not grieve as others do who have no hope."

A Short Litany of Remembrance

For our parents, grandparents, spouses, children, family, and friends: Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord.
For those who died alone, unknown, or afraid: Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord.
For those who died in service to others, like John Harper on the Titanic: Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord.
May light perpetual shine upon them, and may we live and die in the faith of Christ. Amen.

About John Harper

John Harper, a Scottish Baptist minister aboard the RMS Titanic, is remembered for his courageous witness: praying with the fearful, giving away his lifejacket, and urging others to trust in Christ even as the ship sank. His story continues to inspire Christian hope and sacrificial love in the face of death.

A Simple Act of Devotion Today

  • Light a candle and speak aloud the names of those you remember.
  • Pray the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 23.
  • Offer a small act of kindness in their memory—call someone who is grieving, provide a meal, or give alms.

Dismissal

Grant, O Lord, to all who have died the hope of glory; to those who mourn, your comfort; and to your Church on earth the courage to live as people of the resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit... Amen
