Finding solace in solitude and community

17 January 2026

Antony of Egypt, also known as Antony the Great, was one of the earliest Christian monks and is considered the father of monasticism. He lived a life of solitude in the desert, seeking God through prayer, fasting, and contemplation. Charles Gore, on the other hand, founded the Community of the Resurrection, a community of Anglican monks who sought to live out their faith in community. Despite their different approaches to spiritual life, both Antony and Charles understood the importance of finding solace in solitude and community. They remind us that our spiritual journey is not meant to be walked alone, but in the company of others who share our faith and values.

Today's Collect

"Dear God, help us to find balance in our spiritual lives, knowing when to seek solitude for prayer and reflection, and when to come together in community for support and fellowship. Guide us in our search for you, that we may grow in faith and love for you and for one another. Amen."
