Not For Sale: Coolangatta QCWA Secures Heritage Listing Amid Developer Pressure
In a coastal town where high-rises seem to grow overnight, the QCWA Coolangatta hall has stood as a bastion of tradition. However, the fight to keep their doors open recently moved from the kitchen to the courtroom.
President Karen Howell and her members have spent months fending off aggressive advances from developers and real estate agents looking to capitalize on their prime location. The situation escalated to the point where the State Office and solicitors were forced to issue a formal cease and desist letter to stop the relentless pressure from those looking to redevelop the site. Disturbingly, the pressure isn't isolated to Coolangatta; reports suggest that developers have also set their sights on other local chapters, including the Southport branch of the CWA.
A Silver Lining in the Spotlight
While the stress of legal battles weighed heavy, the resulting publicity turned out to be a blessing in disguise. As the community rallied behind the hall, interest in the association skyrocketed.
With the heritage listing now officially secured, the branch can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The designation serves as a permanent shield, ensuring the hall remains a community hub rather than a construction site.
Over a Century of Sisterhood
The QCWA’s mission began in 1922 in Brisbane and Sydney. In a world without the internet or modern technology, the association provided a vital lifeline for women in isolated country towns. It gave them a place to learn skills, socialize, and escape the loneliness of rural life.
Beyond the bush, the QCWA was instrumental in helping young women transitioning to major cities, providing safe housing and a supportive network—a legacy that Karen and her team are proud to continue today in Coolangatta.
Join the Celebration!
To celebrate the official Heritage Listing and thank the locals for their support, the branch is holding a Special Morning Tea.
- Date: Tuesday, 24th February

Come for the history, stay for the scones!
