In the fast-moving currents of the digital age, few individuals stand as firmly as Julie Inman Grant, whose visionary leadership as Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has earned her the Public Service Medal (PSM) in the 2026 Australia Day Honours. This accolade honours her “outstanding public service to the improvement of online safety for Australians” — a mission I’ve had the privilege to support through collaborative consultancy work with her office.

Julie’s tenure has been nothing short of transformative. From the moment she assumed office in 2017, she redefined what it means to regulate the digital frontier. Her approach blends strategic foresight with bold enforcement, setting precedents that resonate far beyond Australia’s borders.

Global Standards, Local Impact

One of Julie’s most significant contributions has been the introduction of world-first, enforceable industry codes under the Online Safety Act 2021. These codes compel global tech giants to take proactive steps in mitigating harmful content, a move that has drawn both praise and resistance. Her leadership ensured that these regulations were not just symbolic but actionable, placing real accountability where it matters most.

Courage in the Face of Controversy

Julie’s resolve was tested publicly in April 2024 when she ordered the takedown of violent footage following the tragic stabbing of Mar Mari Emmanuel. Facing resistance from platforms like X (formerly Twitter), she stood firm, even as the case sparked intense debate around free speech and regulatory authority. Though the legal battle was eventually dropped, her willingness to challenge powerful entities for the sake of public safety speaks volumes.

In 2025, Julie led the charge in implementing Australia’s social media ban for minors under 16 — a bold initiative aimed at curbing youth exposure to harmful online environments. Her advocacy extends beyond legislation; she champions transparency, regularly publishing reports that demystify the mechanisms behind online safety measures.

A Career Rooted in Purpose

Long before her appointment as eSafety Commissioner, Julie carved a niche at the intersection of technology and public policy. After declining a role with the CIA early in her career, she joined Microsoft, rising through the ranks to lead global safety and privacy initiatives. Her academic credentials — a BA in International Relations and an MA in International Communication — reflect a deep understanding of global dynamics, which she applies with precision in the digital realm. Through my submisisons to the eSafety Office, I have come to deeply respect Julie’s integrity, intelligence, and commitment to public service. Her recognition with the PSM is not just deserved — it is overdue.
