Embracing our Brokenness this Ash Wednesday

Lenten Reflections 2026

Ash Wednesday
Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

As we begin our Lenten journey this Wednesday, 18 February 2026, Archbishop Jeremy Greaves invites us to see the ritual of ashes through a lens of profound grace. Rather than a mark of guilt, the ash is a signature of belonging.

"The ash on our foreheads is a dual symbol of our honesty and our optimism. It doesn't label us with disgrace; it marks us with affection. We remain God's own even in our frailty. God doesn't wait for us to reach perfection to find us—He connects with us exactly where we are, in our most authentic, unpolished selves."
An Ash Wednesday Prayer

Lord, as we receive these ashes, strip away our masks. Help us to embrace our humanity and find comfort in Your presence. May this season of reflection lead us closer to the truth of Your love, reminding us that even in the dust, You are breathing new life into our souls. Amen.
