Subduing the Soul through Fasting
25 February 2026
"But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified."
— 1 Corinthians 9:27
The Reflection
Fasting is an ancient practice that invites believers to subdue the flesh and deepen their dependence on the Holy Spirit. In our modern world, the distractions of technology, consumer culture, and entitlement can often eclipse our relationship with God. By engaging in contemporary forms of fasting—like digital detoxes, resisting the urge to buy, fostering gratitude, increasing our physical activity, and modifying our eating habits—we create space for spiritual growth. These intentional acts not only help to establish healthier patterns in our lives but also bring us closer to the heart of God, reminding us of the true source of our nourishment and strength.
Fasting Guidance
- Digital Fast: Limiting social media and screen time to reconnect with God.
- Consumerism Fast: Avoiding unnecessary purchases to focus on what truly matters.
- Gratitude-Focused Fast: Journal daily about things you appreciate to cultivate thankfulness.
- Movement Fast: Set daily activity goals to encourage physical health as a spiritual discipline.
- Modified Eating: Reduce luxury foods or snacks to remind yourself of God's provision.
A Prayer for Surrender
"Heavenly Father, help me to detach from worldly comforts and subdue my desires. Teach me to find joy in simplicity and to seek Your presence above all else. Let this season of fasting refine my spirit and draw me closer to You. I surrender my will and opening myself to the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. Amen."
Amen.
May your sacrifice lead to His presence.
