May the Fourth: The Force, Faith, and Our Call as Peacemakers

Today is May the Fourth—a day when Star Wars fans around the world unite to celebrate the iconic saga and its enduring message: “May the Force be with you.” For many, Star Wars is more than just a story of epic battles and distant galaxies; it’s a tale of hope, redemption, and the ongoing struggle between darkness and light. As progressive Christians, we can find surprising resonance between the Star Wars universe and our own calling as followers of Christ.

In Star Wars, the Force is a mysterious energy that binds the galaxy together, guiding and empowering those who are open to its presence. For Christians, the Holy Spirit is our guide and comforter, moving within and among us, calling us to acts of love, justice, and peace. Just as Jedi are attuned to the Force, we are invited to be attentive to the Spirit’s leading in our daily lives.

Jedi are described as “keepers of the peace,” striving to resolve conflict, protect the vulnerable, and resist the lure of fear and anger. Jesus, too, calls us to be peacemakers: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9). In a world often divided by suspicion and hostility, our faith challenges us to build bridges, seek reconciliation, and embody the radical peace of Christ.

Star Wars teaches that even in the darkest times, hope endures. The Rebel Alliance, outnumbered and outgunned, never gives up on the possibility of a better future. As Christians, we are called to be people of hope, trusting that God’s love can transform even the bleakest situations. Our progressive faith reminds us that the story isn’t over, and that new possibilities are always emerging.

The Star Wars universe is filled with diverse characters from every corner of the galaxy, working together for a common cause. Progressive Christianity, too, celebrates diversity and inclusion, affirming that all are welcome at God’s table. Our communities are strongest when we honour each person’s unique gifts and perspectives.

On this May the Fourth, let’s remember our calling as followers of Jesus: to be keepers of the peace, bearers of hope, and builders of inclusive community. Whether you’re a lifelong Star Wars fan or just appreciate its message, may you feel the Spirit’s presence guiding you today.

May the Force—and the peace of Christ—be with you, always.
