When the Journey Doesn’t Go as Planned: Finding Hope in the Lectionary Readings

Last week’s lectionary reading centered on the story of Doubting Thomas, a disciple who struggled to believe in the resurrection until he encountered the risen Jesus for himself. That story invited us to consider the reality of doubt, the need for reassurance, and the grace that meets us in our uncertainty. This week’s lectionary readings for the Third Sunday of Easter (Year C) continue these themes, inviting us into stories of unexpected journeys, transformation, and hope. The passages from Acts, Psalms, Revelation, and John encourage us to reflect on what happens when life takes a turn we didn’t anticipate, and how God meets us in those moments....whether we are wrestling with doubt, facing disappointment, or discovering new purpose.

Acts 9:1-20 – Transformation in the unexpected

The story of Saul’s conversion is a powerful reminder that even the most determined journeys can be interrupted. Saul, confident in his mission, is suddenly stopped, blinded, and forced to rely on others. His independence is stripped away, and he must trust in the guidance of strangers. Yet, it is precisely in this place of vulnerability that Saul receives new vision, wisdom, and a transformed purpose. Sometimes, our own plans must be set aside so that we can receive something greater—new insight, new relationships, and a new direction.

Psalm 30 – From mourning to joy

Psalm 30 is a song of gratitude for God’s deliverance. The psalmist speaks of being lifted up from despair, of mourning turned into dancing, and of joy that comes after a night of weeping. This passage reminds us that difficult seasons are not the end of the story. Even when we feel defeated or alone, God is at work, bringing healing and restoration. The setbacks and disappointments we face can become the soil in which new hope and gratitude grow.

Revelation 5:11-14 – A bigger story

In Revelation, we glimpse a vision of worship that encompasses all creation. Every voice joins in praise, recognizing the worthiness of the Lamb. This cosmic perspective reminds us that our individual struggles and journeys are part of a much larger story. Even when we feel small or insignificant, we are woven into God’s grand narrative. Our experiences, both the triumphs and the trials, contribute to the chorus of praise that surrounds the throne.

John 21:1-19 – Unexpected provision and new purpose

The disciples, after a fruitless night of fishing, encounter the risen Jesus on the shore. At his word, their empty nets are filled to overflowing. Jesus then invites them to breakfast and restores Peter, giving him a new mission. This story speaks to those moments when our efforts seem to come up empty. It is often in our emptiness that Jesus meets us, providing in ways we could not have anticipated. The gifts and opportunities that emerge from disappointment can become the foundation for new purpose and calling.

In every journey, especially those that don’t go as planned, these scriptures offer encouragement:

Transformation can come from unexpected places.

Joy can follow seasons of sorrow.

Our stories are part of something much bigger.

And even when we feel empty-handed, God can fill our nets and call us forward.

If you find yourself on an uncertain path, take heart. The road may be different than you imagined, but you are not alone. There is wisdom to be gained, new relationships to be formed, and a deeper purpose waiting to be discovered. Trust that, just as in these ancient stories, God is at work in your journey...turning mourning into dancing, emptiness into abundance, and uncertainty into hope.

To accompany these reflections, I’ve included the song “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” by Hillsong United. This song beautifully captures the heart of stepping out in faith when the way forward is uncertain. Its lyrics speak of trusting God to lead us through unfamiliar waters, just as the scriptures remind us that God is present in every twist and turn of our journey. As you listen, may you be encouraged to embrace the unknown with hope, knowing that you are never alone—God’s grace and guidance are with you every step of the way.

May Almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. May He guide your steps, bring light to your path, and fill you with His peace as you journey forward. Amen.
