Bach - St John Passion BWV 245

Bach - St John Passion BWV 245 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society

A profound musical journey into the divine origin of Christ through Bach's first Passion in Leipzig

The St John Passion, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for the All of Bach project, represents the first Passion Johann Sebastian Bach composed as cantor in Leipzig. Unlike the other three evangelists—Matthew, Luke, and Mark—John’s Gospel emphasizes Christ’s divine origin. This divine nature remains central throughout Jesus’ suffering, offering a unique perspective where Jesus is portrayed less as a human figure and more as the divine Son of God.

For this remarkable performance, a cast of singers under the age of 35 was selected, including orchestra members, with the exception of the leaders. This youthful ensemble was chosen through a rigorous process of auditions and masterclasses, ensuring a fresh and vibrant interpretation of this timeless work.

The recording took place on March 11th, 2017, at the Grote Kerk in Naarden, as part of the All of Bach project. To support the continuation of this extraordinary project, viewers are encouraged to subscribe to the Netherlands Bach Society YouTube channel and consider donating here.
