What’s Happening?

The NSW Government is currently exhibiting a proposal to redevelop St Paul’s Anglican Church, Bankstown, and replace it with a 23-storey mixed-use building. This project (Application Number SSD-79709963) includes affordable housing, a new place of worship, community facilities, a child-care centre, and commercial spaces. While it promises new amenities, it also means the loss of a site with deep historical, spiritual, and community significance.

How to Make a Submission

Memorials and Ashes: What You Need to Know

As part of the redevelopment, parishioners have been notified about memorials and ashes interred in the rose garden beside the church. The church has stated they will do their best to return memorial plaques and ashes to families where possible. However, if ashes were scattered in the garden rather than interred in a container, only the memorial plaque can be returned—the ashes themselves will not be retrievable.

This is a deeply sensitive issue for many families and highlights the real human cost of redevelopment. The loss of a sacred resting place is not just about buildings, but about memory, respect, and community identity.

Why Your Voice Matters

The NSW Government will soon move to the next stages of assessment and determination. Community submissions are a vital part of this process. Whether you support or oppose the redevelopment, your perspective will be considered as part of the official record.

A Prayer for St Paul’s and the Community

Loving God, we give thanks for the generations who have worshipped, mourned, and celebrated at St Paul’s. May we honour the past, care for the present, and protect the sacred for future generations. Amen.
