Subduing the Soul in Lent
24 February 2026
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
— Jeremiah 29:11
The Reflection
Fasting is an ancient spiritual discipline that invites us to subdue our appetites, both physical and emotional, as we seek a deeper relationship with God. In our modern world filled with distractions and comforts, the practice of fasting helps us to detach from what we think we need in order to immerse ourselves fully in our dependence on the Holy Spirit. By letting go of digital distractions, unnecessary consumerism, and indulgent luxuries, we clear our minds and hearts to appreciate the true abundance that surrounds us. As we engage in movement and cultivate gratitude, we become attuned to the whispers of the Spirit, paving the way for renewal and spiritual growth during this sacred season.
Fasting Guidance
- Digital fasting: Limit social media and screen time to reconnect with God and others.
- Consumerism fasting: Avoid unnecessary purchases for the duration of Lent, focusing instead on needs versus wants.
- Gratitude-focused fasting: Each day, write down three things you are grateful for to cultivate appreciation in your life.
- Movement/activity fasting: Commit to daily physical activity, whether it's walking, jogging, or cycling, to enhance your body and spirit.
- Modified eating: Cut back on luxuries like sweets, caffeine, or processed foods, embracing a simpler diet to focus on spiritual nourishment.
A Prayer for Surrender
"Dear Lord, during this Lenten season, help me to release my grip on comforts and distractions. Let me embrace simplicity and focus on You. Teach me to appreciate Your gifts and to move my heart from entitlement to gratitude. I surrender my soul and will, allowing Your spirit to guide me in this transformative journey. Amen."
Amen.
May your sacrifice lead to His presence.
