The "Global Anglican Council": A Pivot or a Panic?
A New Name, But the Same Old Story?
Big news out of Abuja this week: the GAFCON movement has officially rebranded. In a sudden "late-night" pivot, the group has scrapped its plans to elect a primus inter pares (a rival "first among equals") and will now be known as the Global Anglican Council.
- The Pivot: They’ve adopted a "committee-style" leadership to replace the failed bid for a central leader.
- The Confusion: One bishop reportedly asked if this shift meant he was "now a Presbyterian," as the sudden U-turn deflated the conference mood.
- The Rebrand: Dropping "GAFCON" for a name that sounds more official, though the underlying exclusive theology remains unchanged.
While the leadership claims this move reflects a "spirit-led" sharing of stewardship, it looks more like a strategic retreat. For those of us in the progressive church, we know that true shared leadership means making room for the very people this group continues to sideline.
