Behlau Murakami Grant ILP
Courage, integrity, and relentless advocacy — these are the qualities embodied by Gold Coast lawyer Jason Murakami. With a career shaped by a profound commitment to human rights and justice, Jason’s journey is a beacon of hope for those seeking fairness in a complex legal world.
Mr. Murakami is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia, appearing in the Family Court, Federal Circuit Court, and all State Magistrate and Local Courts on domestic violence matters.
Inspired by his grandfather’s wrongful internment during WWII, Jason left a budding journalism career to pursue law, studying at QUT while working with News Corp. His legal training began at Minter Ellison in 1999, followed by roles at Nyst Lawyers (Family Law Partner) and Levitt Robinson Solicitors in Sydney, where he led complex, high-profile cases. In 2016, he co-authored a ground-breaking submission on domestic violence prevention for men, published in the Sydney Morning Herald. As a fourth-generation Gold Coaster and former School Captain of Aquinas College, Jason is deeply connected to the community and is considered the region’s leading dealmaker in family law disputes.
His career highlights include the successful appeal of Senator Pauline Hanson’s conviction, the acquittal of the Lacey brothers, the Palm Island class action, and the defense of Emma Roberts-Smith. Now, as director of Behlau Murakami Grant ILP (with a Pro Bono Division), Jason continues to fight for those who need it most.
Beyond the courtroom, Jason is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Griffith University and founder of Australia’s longest-running Innocence Project.
His collaborations with elite barristers like Geoffrey Robertson KC and Craig Eberhardt KC reflect his deep understanding of courtroom dynamics and strategic advocacy.
Behlau Murakami Grant ILP is also renowned for its expertise in high-profile defamation and reputation management cases, with the three partners collectively bringing over 50 years of experience in this specialised field. Defamation proceedings carry significant risks and costs if not handled with expert advice, which is why clients trust a firm deeply familiar with the media landscape and experienced in defamation trials. Jason Murakami, a former press journalist, notably acted for Emma Roberts-Smith in the landmark defamation trial against Channel 9-Fairfax, often described as Australia’s defamation trial of the century. The firm’s success in defending serious defamation allegations and advising clients on reputational management during crises—including criminal and commercial litigation—makes Behlau Murakami Grant the law firm of choice for those facing complex reputation challenges.
